State-minimum liability limits protect your license, not your savings. We quote personal auto across competing carriers with limits sized to what you actually have at stake, uninsured motorist coverage treated as the core protection it is, and honest answers about the driving your policy does and doesn't cover.
Liability Limits: The Number That Actually Protects You
California's minimum liability limits are 30/60/15 — $30,000 per injured person, $60,000 per accident, and $15,000 for property damage. One night in a hospital or one totaled late-model SUV can exhaust those limits, and everything above them is your problem: wages can be garnished and assets pursued to satisfy a judgment.
The gap between minimum limits and meaningful limits usually costs less than drivers expect, because the first dollars of coverage are the most expensive and the higher layers are comparatively cheap. We quote 100/300/100 and higher as the working baseline for homeowners and anyone with savings to protect, and we pair the auto policy with a personal umbrella when the math calls for it — a separate policy that adds $1 million or more of liability protection across both auto and home.
Why minimums are a trap
Liability coverage pays others on your behalf. When a judgment exceeds your limits, the difference comes from you — the policy that saved a few dollars a month becomes the most expensive one you ever bought.
Umbrella economics
A personal umbrella typically prices far below what the same limits would cost inside the auto policy, because it sits above your underlying coverage. It usually requires specific minimum auto limits underneath — one more reason not to buy minimums.
Uninsured & Underinsured Motorist: Coverage for Everyone Else's Decisions
A meaningful share of California drivers carry no insurance at all, and far more carry only the minimums. Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage is what pays for your injuries, your passengers, and — with UM property damage — your vehicle when the at-fault driver can't. California carriers must offer it, and waiving it requires your signature for a reason.
We treat UM/UIM limits as the mirror of your liability limits: if you believe your own injuries are worth protecting at the level you protect strangers, the two numbers should match. This is routinely the cheapest coverage on the policy relative to what it does, and the one drivers are most grateful for after a hit-and-run.
Rideshare, Delivery, and the Gaps Personal Policies Don't Mention
Personal auto policies are priced for personal use, and most exclude driving for a fee. If you drive for a rideshare platform, the window between turning the app on and accepting a ride is the classic gap: the platform's full commercial coverage generally hasn't attached yet, and your personal policy may treat the app-on period as excluded livery use. Food and package delivery raises the same question with fewer built-in protections from the platform.
This is fixable — but only if it's disclosed. Several carriers offer rideshare endorsements that extend your personal policy across the app-on gap, and delivery use can change which carriers want the risk at all. Our quote flow asks about rideshare and delivery use directly, because the answer changes the right placement — and because an exclusion discovered at claim time is the most expensive way to learn it.
The period-one gap
App on, no ride accepted: the rideshare platform's coverage is limited and your personal policy may exclude the period entirely. A rideshare endorsement bridges exactly this window.
Delivery driving
Delivering food, packages, or goods for a fee is commonly excluded as business use under personal policies. Disclosing it lets us place you with a carrier whose appetite includes it.
Honesty pays
Undisclosed commercial use risks a denied claim precisely when the stakes are highest. Disclosed, it is simply an underwriting fact we shop around.
Physical Damage, Deductibles, and Bundling That Actually Saves
Comprehensive and collision coverage repair or replace your own vehicle — and the right deductible is a cash-flow decision, not a default. We price the spread: if raising a deductible from $500 to $1,000 saves little, keep the lower one; if it saves real money, bank the difference. For older vehicles, we'll tell you plainly when carrying collision no longer pencils out.
Bundling home and auto with one carrier often earns a genuine multi-policy discount, and as an independent brokerage we can compare that bundle against the best split placement — because sometimes the bundle wins and sometimes it doesn't. The comparison, not the slogan, is what saves money. Every quote we run shows you the options side by side.
Frequently asked questions
What are the minimum auto insurance requirements in California?
As of 2025, California requires liability limits of at least $30,000 per injured person, $60,000 per accident, and $15,000 in property damage (30/60/15). Those limits satisfy the law, but they are exhausted quickly in a serious accident — medical bills and vehicle values have long outrun them. For anyone with income or assets to protect, we quote substantially higher limits and often a personal umbrella; the added cost is usually smaller than drivers expect.
Does my personal auto policy cover driving for Uber, Lyft, or DoorDash?
Usually not fully. Most personal policies exclude driving for a fee, and rideshare platforms' own coverage is limited during the app-on, no-ride-accepted period. Food and package delivery is commonly excluded as business use with even less platform backstop. The fix is disclosure: rideshare endorsements can bridge the gap, and delivery use steers the placement toward carriers whose appetite includes it. Our quote asks about both up front.
Is uninsured motorist coverage worth it in California?
We think it is among the most valuable coverages on the policy. It pays for your injuries — and with UM property damage, your vehicle — when the at-fault driver has no insurance or too little, including many hit-and-run scenarios. California carriers must offer it and a written waiver is required to reject it. We generally recommend UM/UIM limits that match your liability limits.
Will one accident or ticket make my insurance unaffordable?
Not necessarily. Carriers weigh incidents differently — one carrier's surcharge is another's shrug — which is exactly where an independent brokerage earns its keep. We re-shop the placement across competing markets rather than letting a single carrier's pricing decide your outcome. California's Good Driver discount rules also mean your rate recovers as the incident ages.
